Easy Riders and Agora’s: Taos Farmer’s Market Commences It’s Season

Last Saturday's weather cleared just in time for the second week of Taos Farmer's Market to open in warm sunshine. Accordingly, I rose early in order to catch some magic hour light and hopefully talk to some vendors before it got busy. The previous week's market was the premiere for the 2015 season, yet the weather was rainy and cold for most of the day with town rumbling in a parade of motorcycles celebrating the second annual Dennis Hopper Day in Taos, stealing the market's thunder.

Cooking up Economic Development for Rural NM

Something is stirring at the Mixing Bowl, the community commercial kitchen at the South Valley Economic Development Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This small food business incubator will celebrate a decade of success in 2015 by asking the New Mexico State legislature to fund development of a dozen other similar kitchens throughout the state. If funded, the La Cocina Initiative will help a dozen existing, underutilized commercial kitchens in rural communities in New Mexico build out programming based on the successful Mixing Bowl model.

The Art of Slow-Crafted Travel

"Our target was not exclusively food: we wanted to bring back the tango, the umbrella, and to celebrate a leisurely daily pace." - Folco Portinari, architect of the Slow Food Manifesto on the beginnings of the Slow Food ideology. Times are changing, and nowhere is that more evident than in the world of travel, as global economics have considerably slowed the tide of tourism witnessed in the boom decades of the late-eighties/early 90's and earlier part of the 21st century.

If There’s Squash Bugs In Heaven, I Ain’t Staying: Evelyn Losack and Stacia Spragg-Braude

If There’s Squash Bugs in Heaven, I Ain’t Staying is a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking read for any gardener who has ever dreamed of having his or her own farm, or anyone interested in the rich history of Corrales. In this book, Stacia Spragg-Braude beautifully captures the life and energy of her friend Evelyn Losack, beloved music teacher and third-generation Corrales farmer.

Barrel of Memories: Black Mesa Winery at the Forefront of New Mexico’s Wine Resurgence

Black Mesa's Winemaker Karl Johnsen and I are standing in the Winery's barrel room stacked high with barrels of various heights and sizes and chatting about nothing in particular while I snap sundry photos, when it occurs to me that all the barrels have words on them. My interest piqued, I walk around on my own and take note of some of them in an attempt to determine what it's all about.

She’s Got Spirit

Molly Norton, a Santa Fe native, spent years working as a bartender for various watering holes. She became the tasting room and events manager at Santa Fe Spirits in the summer of 2013 when owner Colin Keegan opened a second tasting room in downtown Santa Fe. Cocktail culture interested Norton, but she confessed that when she started she knew how to make a mean margarita, but didn’t then know much about distilling. A fast learner, Norton can now spout off the details of a fine spirit from how the aging process happens to the complexity of flavor created by the five native botanicals in Wheeler’s Gin.

Masculin, Feminin: Vivac’s Perfect Marriage

It's from this perspective the Padberg's built their business philosophy on, being acutely aware of their surroundings and its rich history, purposefully choosing to take on the weighty responsibility of stewarding it into the future. It's a big gamble. The Embudo Valley has a relatively short window for growing and extreme diurnal temperature swings, leading them to source a good deal of grape's from the southern part of the state.

Anasazi Fields Winery

Last weekend, we were looking for a quiet couple’s adventure off the beaten path. When I found Anasazi Fields Winery online, I knew it would be the perfect afternoon trip out of the city. Just 30 minutes north of Albuquerque on I25 and a few miles east of on NM165, we were in the village of Placitas.

A café transformed into a cooking school at the Los Alamos Co-op

By day, the Los Alamos Co-op is a bustling market with colorful veggies, presses to make peanut or almond butter (depending on what suits your fancy), and descriptive placards describing the origin of the tasty locally-sourced goods. But by night, once a month, the little café transforms into an off-beat cooking school. The café tables become a venue for cutting boards and preparation: the store is the muse and the scientist is the chef.
